This time around, we finally get inside Kane’s head. He is the peacekeeper of the family. Dubbed the one who brings order to chaos, balance to uncertainty – Kane has perfected putting his needs last and everyone else’s first. This doesn’t change when Mari waltzes back into his life after a hot and heavy run in at a casino in Vegas. Mari is the voice of reason Kane has been missing all along. She pushes him to think for himself, makes him answer the questions he has been avoiding, and becomes his guide to finding what truly makes him happy. I love their relationship and their failed attempts to keep things platonic in order to have a co-parenting relationship. Mari needed someone to show her that love was not fleeting and that she was capable of so much more than what she believed. That is what I enjoyed most about this book, they were each other’s oracle – giving a glimpse of possibilities that they never imagined: Kane becoming a photographer, outside of the family business and Mari becoming a mother and a partner. The cherry on top is hanging out with the Wilder Klan and the matriarch of the family. Each book embeds us more and more into this family and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
