Fair Catch

Book #3 of a 5 Book Series

Book Summary:

Taking in Kason Fuller as roommate is meant to be a favor; one I regret immediately.

The bumbling, virgin football player drives me to the brink of sanity, stealing my food, my sleep, my peace and solitude.

My solution? Call a ceasefire.
Get him out on dates and out of my hair.

Yet as our truce shifts, I realize there’s a depth to this connection unlike any I’ve felt before.

It turns out, I don’t mind his presence.

I crave it, along with every morsel I learn about him.
But falling for the guy from the wrong side of the tracks wasn’t in the cards.

And I’m not the only one who thinks so.

Now, I’m at a crossroads between the life I thought I’d have, or risking everything to catch him.

Mini Review:

While I loved “Iced Out” and “Caught Stealing” is by far my favorite in the series, “Fair Catch” wasn’t as great as I wanted it to be. I don’t think it was the story itself, just the predecessors that dulled its shine. In “Iced Out,” we have an intense enemies-to-lovers situation that causes so much inner turmoil for one of the characters that you aren’t sure what will break first – his restraint or his mental state. In “Caught Stealing,” the back-and-forth antics and high stakes of a friendship keep your eyes glued to the page.

With “Fair Catch,” the high angst isn’t there, the intensity isn’t there, and while it’s attempted in some form when Kason initially moves in with Hayes, the animosity between them fizzles very quickly. I felt like CE was attempting to give us a brief reprieve from the normally high-energy interactions between main characters. This time, the antagonist was outside their circle, played by Hayes’ judgmental family. I think breaking the college bubble and going outside for the reason they couldn’t be together is what made it fall flat for me. It felt like a bit of a stretch for that third-act breakup.

I also felt that while Kason was lovable, his character wasn’t strong enough to hold an entire book. He was great as a secondary character, and while sweet and adorable as a primary, I would have enjoyed this as a novella, sans the third-act breakup, rather than an entire book. I did appreciate the ending and how everything worked out, including the chance to check in on Holden, Phoenix, Quinton, and Oakley. We also got a peek at book four when Madden is caught sneaking out of Theo’s house. It will be interesting to see how that one fares.

I did have my hopes crushed about book five. I was hoping it would be between Noah and Luca, but it’s between Logan (one of the swipes from Kason’s app) and Camden. Oh well, I am still on board with this series and while I rather not, I will patiently wait for “Playing Dirty” to hit the scene July 29, 2025 (but if there is any chance for an ARC – I am all for it!)

About the Book Author

CE Ricci

CE Ricci is an international best-selling author who enjoys plenty of things in her free time, but writing about herself in the third person isn’t one of them. She believes home isn’t a place, but a feeling, and it’s one she gets when she’s chilling lakeside or on hiking trails with her dogs, camera in hand. She’s addicted to all things photography, plants, peaks, puppies, and paperbacks, though not necessarily in that order. Music is her love language, and traveling the country (and world) is the way she chooses to find most of her inspiration for whatever epic love story she will tell next!
