Book Summary:
Lizzie has made endless mistakes. Kitchen fires, pyramid schemes, bangs (of the hair and human variety), you name it, she’s done it… and made a mess of it too. One mistake she’s never made is letting anyone get closer to her than a single hook-up. But after losing yet another bakery job due to her uncontrolled ADHD, she breaks her cardinal rule and has a two-night-stand that changes everything.
Once burned, twice shy, Rake has given up on relationships. And feelings. And any form of intimacy for that matter. Yet something about charming, chaotic Lizzie has him lowering his guard. For two nights, that is. Then it’s back home to Australia and far away from the pesky feelings Lizzie pulls from him. But when Lizzie tells him she’s got an unexpected bun in the oven, he’ll do whatever it takes to be a part of his child’s life… except be emotionally vulnerable, obviously. He’s never going to make that mistake again.
Through a series of mishaps, totally “platonic” single bed sharing, and an underground erotic baking scheme, Lizzie and Rake learn that even the biggest mistakes can have the most beautiful consequences.
Mini Review:
Once again, Mazey Eddings doesn’t surprise me with her remarkable talent of putting you into the mind of her neurodiverse characters. As I read her books out of order, I have learned about PTSD, Anxiety, and now ADHD. The knowledge she shares with her readers is invaluable!
In Lizzie Blake’s Best Mistake, we jump back into the fierce squad of four – this time focusing on Lizzie. We met her in A Brush with Love and adored her quick wit and sharp tongue. In this book, we are privy to all we didn’t know about Lizzie before – her self-doubt, inner voice that screams judgment, her fight with ADHD, her strained relationship with her family, and her desire to never be a burden – birthing the rule to not sleep with the same person or be in a relationship.
I don’t even know where to begin with Lizzie and Rake (which – no lie, thought the same thing Lizzie did when he said his name!). The banter, the chemistry, and the darkness both of them carried kept you glued to the pages. Each one was determined to protect the other from themselves. Rake – running away from the damage of his past and what the pain he believed he caused. Lizzie, not wanting to be yet another problem to deal with because, as much as she tried, she just couldn’t be what people wanted her to be. Lizzie’s struggle was full of such sorrow. It hurt even more when she had moments of believing that she may have been wrong, she may have been enough – only for someone to make her feel small again. The only reason the two of them even gave getting along a fighting chance was because of their desire to co-parent the two-night stand surprise.
I loved the support system Lizzie had through this book. Indira was an amazing friend who protected her as if she was family. When she finally found her calling and a boss who truly saw for who she was (not who she was supposed to be) – you really had the pleasure of watching Lizzie flourish.
What I found fascinating about this book was how it focused on breaking the prison we create for ourselves with our thoughts and prospectives. Rake and Lizzie were in their own way and once they realized how much they were holding themselves back, you got an HEA that left a smile on your face and hope in your heart.
