Book Summary:

Lesson #1: Don’t fall in love with two guys at the same time.

Vanessa Hunt prefers to stay in her 5th grade classroom and avoid relationships entirely, so when she meets not just one, but two, handsome strangers in the same week, it starts to throw her entire life off balance.

How is she supposed to avoid Jack, aka Principal Hottie, when he walks right into her school as the new interim principal? Too bad she’s made a rule for herself that she will never date someone she works with ever again.

Then, there’s fireworks when she meets Rishi at her roommate’s wedding. Only problem is: Rishi’s family wants him to marry someone else. When he finds himself torn between tradition and his heart, he will have to decide how many rules he’s willing to break for love.

Turns out, one teacher + one principal + one doctor = an equation that is nothing but trouble. When Vanessa starts having feelings for them both, she learns that falling – in love and in life – can really turn your whole world upside down. Will she figure things out before she ends up losing them both?

My Review:

A love triangle for the ages, Miss Indecisive is a light-hearted romantic comedy that follows the tale of a fifth grade teacher who is just looking for love. As this was my first love triangle, I didn’t know what to expect but was definitely not ready for the emotional ride it took me on!

When it rains, it pours! Vanessa has been in a drought since she had her heartbroken by her ex boyfriend Brad. Now the skies have opened and it’s raining men! First, she is dumbstruck by the insanely gorgeous Interim Principal. Next, she is set ablaze by her roommate’s cousin at a pre-wedding event. Then, just to keep the rule of three alive, she is set up on blind date with the nicest guy she has ever met. What’s a girl to do? Determined to hold strong to her rule about not dating where she works (sorry Jack), and insisting on exploring the insane chemistry she is feeling for a certain doctor (sorry Josh), Vanessa is all in with Rishi and is ready to give love a chance again and chase her happily ever after. The problem, Rishi is already betrothed. Following Indian traditions, Rishi is set to marry Priya, bringing their two households together. Family is everything to him and he has been the good son and done what they asked, but is he willing to betray his heart, letting Vanessa go in order to appease his family. Just how much are these two willing to sacrifice to be together?

What I liked about it: I love Vanessa’s inner monologue. She is a mess and she knows it (and owns it). I swear Cam is her Jimmy Cricket! Their encounters are absolutely priceless. I also enjoy how smooth Rishi is. You gotta give the man credit for boldness! The escalation and intensity of their relationship would have been hard to believe but in the instances of instant chemistry, it was fathomable.

What I loved about it: I loved how Elisa spoke of Indian traditions and illustrated Vanessa’s naivety to it. She didn’t just magically know all the rules and understood because of Naya, her Indian roommate. She showed true emotions and frustrations about the culture differences – that love wasn’t enough for two people to be together. The community, the values, tradition, honor, family – there was so much information presented that you felt informed about how you should perceive the situation. It wasn’t black or white, this or that, it was complicated for everyone involved.

I couldn’t get enough of Cam! His psychological input into the moments in Vanessa’s life, his insight and perspective when dealing with others, he was instrumental to the entire story. What I loved most is that while he could easily remain objective when viewing/dealing with others, he had his own insecurities and slip-ups, showing that even with all the wisdom he dispensed, education he accumulated, and experience, he was still human and was flawed like everyone else.

I also enjoyed the multi-POV of the story. Going back and forth between Vanessa and Rishi was fine but to get a moment inside of the heads of Jack, Chitra, and Cam was an unexpected treat. I almost wish we could have gotten a glimpse into Rob and Jenn’s mind but not sure how much that would have added to the story (especially with Jenn being very vocal about her opinions and Rob being supportive with the insanity). I did appreciate the closure she received from Brad along with the realization that you can’t truly judge a person until you walk a mile in their shoes.

What doesn’t directly impact the story but care to mention for empaths who may read this: I will definitely say I learned from this book that love triangles are not my cup of tea. No matter what, someone ends up getting hurt/rejected in the end. I reached a point of the book where I had to skip to the end (something I NEVER do) just to reassure there was a point to all of this (as it was becoming emotionally draining). Again, this was my experience and for someone who enjoys love triangles or may not be as empathetic to the “one not chosen” may be able to handle it better than me. The positive of this experience was that it showed the depth of the characters. I had an emotional attachment to each one, drawing out raw emotions instead of just being a spectator of the story.

The ending had me cracking up and was absolutely delightful! While some points of the book were touch and go in terms of interest (the back and forth did cause it to feel as if the story dragged just a little longer than necessary), the strong finish made the entire read worth it. I am excited to see there is a sequel and curious how things will play out for Priya and what will happen next.
