Puck Me Baby

Book #4 in a 6 Book Series

Book Summary:

“You’re going to be a daddy.”

Looking up into Alexi Petrov’s dark eyes as I break the news, I’m scared out of my mind. This man is the most terrifying defender in the NHL, and if it weren’t for my sporty new baby bump, I probably wouldn’t believe we hooked up that night. (Yes, I’ve sworn off margaritas for life.)

But the Alexi who goes to my doctor appointments, moves me into his guesthouse, and cooks me so many gourmet meals I look like I’m carrying twins? He isn’t scary at all.

He’s sweet. And intense. And so sexy I want to smear him with honey and lick it off every inch of his powerful, protective, oh-so-swoony-worthy body.

But that’s not a part of our relationship anymore. We’re friends who intend to raise a child together. That’s all…

Right?

* * *

There’s no way I can be just friends with Amanda Esposito.

She’s everything I want in a woman—strong, sexy, compassionate, a little bit wild—with curves for miles and a smile she smiles just for me.

But no matter how much I want her, I don’t know if I’ve got what it takes to be that guy—the one with his heart on his sleeve. I learned the hard way that love can get real ugly, real fast.

But when my new family is threatened, I realize how much I want this woman and our baby in my life for the long haul, and how hard I’m willing to fight for them.

They say I’m a dangerous man to cross on the ice, but they haven’t seen anything yet…

Mini Review:

Four books in and I’ve come to recognize two consistent elements in Lili’s narrative: 1) her fondness for plots driven by miscommunication, and 2) her skill in crafting lovable, tough athletes who excel on the ice but struggle immensely with expressing their emotions or showing a hint of vulnerability. A perfect example is Petrov, who has harbored feelings for Amanda since their one-night stand. When Amanda re-enters his life for Diana and Tanner’s impromptu wedding, Petrov finds himself captivated by her yet again, however, he is  unprepared for the ‘bundle of surprise’ she brings along.

Like the pattern established in previous books, Petrov and Amanda face undeniable attraction but choose to suppress their feelings to concentrate on co-parenting and sustaining a healthy dynamic for their unborn child. The twist: Petrov is also concealing a secret of his own, which adds a layer of suspense throughout the story, particularly when he shares a heartbreaking visit to his past that hints at its relevance to the baby.

Despite their intention to remain just friends, it was entertaining to see how Petrov became increasingly protective of Amanda. He learns that to gain her cooperation, he must communicate his wishes with requests rather than demands, as Amanda often seems to momentarily forget her pregnancy (you have to read it to see what I mean).

The hilarious situations that happen with the supporting characters is what adds to the overall enjoyment of the story. Same above before, Valente does not shy away from bringing heat and passion while also weaving in deeply affectionate and intimate moments. I would highly recommend this super sappy yet sweetly endearing ‘bun in the oven’ romance.
