Book Summary:

Nine years ago, Vivienne Jones nursed her broken heart like any young witch would: vodka, weepy music, bubble baths…and a curse on the horrible boyfriend. Sure, Vivi knows she shouldn’t use her magic this way, but with only an “orchard hayride” scented candle on hand, she isn’t worried it will cause him anything more than a bad hair day or two.

That is until Rhys Penhallow, descendent of the town’s ancestors, breaker of hearts, and annoyingly just as gorgeous as he always was, returns to Graves Glen, Georgia. What should be a quick trip to recharge the town’s ley lines and make an appearance at the annual fall festival turns disastrously wrong. With one calamity after another striking Rhys, Vivi realizes her silly little Ex Hex may not have been so harmless after all.

Suddenly, Graves Glen is under attack from murderous wind-up toys, a pissed off ghost, and a talking cat with some interesting things to say. Vivi and Rhys have to ignore their off the charts chemistry to work together to save the town and find a way to break the break-up curse before it’s too late.

Mini Review:

It started off as a glance, a kiss, how did it end up like this? Heartbroken, drunk, soaking in a bathtub mourning a relationship, fling really – three months gone because he failed to tell her he was engaged. Ok betrothed but semantics aside, he was promised to someone else and never truly free to be hers. Despite her cousin’s protest to move on (hey they just broke up nine hours ago – not that she was counting), she figured a few glasses of vodka could ease the pain. What she hadn’t planned on was her cousin Gwyn having a different idea. What’s a little curse to help mend a broken heart? Setting up a salt circle, Vivi and Gwyn decide to have a little fun, no harm – it wasn’t a real curse anyway. Consider it more of a cleansing. Or so she thought. Fast forward nine years later and the man who broke her heart is back in town for Founder’s Day. Warned prior to his arrival, Vivi just needs to steer clear of him until he does his duties and crawls back under the rock from which he came. Problem is, strange things have been happening ever since Rhys returned to town. Most of them had to be a coincidence but as one after another insane incident happens, Vivi starts to wonder if her little joke nine years ago had more power behind it than she realized. She couldn’t have possibly… He can’t be… Oh no.

While I don’t normally read supernatural books, I really enjoyed this one! Rhys quick wit and sarcasm made the most extreme situations absolutely hilarious. Add in the chemistry between him and Vivi and this book was a lot hotter than I was expecting. Spiciness aside, I love the evolution of Vivienne character. Watching her coming into her own, rising to the challenge, and owning a piece of her that she put on a shelf because of her mother was inspiring. I loved her cousin Gwyn and her Aunt Elaine as well but Sir Purrcival had me cracking up! I am a little on the fence about the resolve. It was a huge build up and when the moment came, I was prepared for something explosive but it was somewhat mild – I even read it twice in case I glossed over the impact. In either case, the overall message of truth, sacrifice, and love was loud and clear. Curious if there will be a book three focusing on what Rhys’s brother Bowen was doing in the mountains.

About the Book Author

Rachel Hawkins (Pen Name - Erin Sterling)

Born in Virginia and raised in Alabama, Rachel Hawkins has been writing since Kindergarten when her first book, a tense thriller involving a unicorn, a witch, and a princess, was called, “very imaginative!” by her teacher and “a searing work of genius” by her mother.

Since then, Rachel has written over a dozen books for children and adults (sadly all unicorn-free thus far), and been published in more than twenty countries. As Rachel Hawkins, she wrote the New York Times bestselling THE WIFE UPSTAIRS, a Southern Gothic twist on JANE EYRE that the Southern Review of Books called, “a thrill ride,” and Entertainment Weekly dubbed, “a gothic thriller laced with arsenic.” Her latest thriller, RECKLESS GIRLS, also debuted on the New York Times list with Kirkus calling it, “a soapy, claustrophobic page-turner.”

When not writing modern Gothic thrillers as Rachel Hawkins, she also pens paranormal romantic comedies under the name Erin Sterling. Her debut romance, THE EX HEX, was a Book of the Month pick as well as a New York Times and USA Today Bestseller.

Rachel currently lives in Auburn, Alabama with her husband, son, and five cats. (Yes, five. She knows.). In her free time, she enjoys reading, cooking, and picking up an assortment of creative hobbies she will give up on after a week or two. You can find her on Twitter and Instagram.
