Book Summary:

A newly single girl. A tall dark handsome stranger. What could go wrong?

It’s 7 a.m. on a Monday and Abby Reynolds isn’t where she wants to be. She wants to be in her beautiful loft apartment in Manhattan, drinking a coffee with her fiancé.

Instead, she’s heading back to the childhood home in rural Ireland she swore she’d never return to, with some big old secrets. Namely that she’s suddenly found herself unemployed, homeless, and absolutely 100% single.

She’s feeling all out of luck. Until the first person she meets after she touches down is an absurdly hot guy called Luke, who offers her a lift home. Gazing deep into his sparkling emerald-green eyes, Abby knows instantly that he’s exactly what she needs to take her mind off everything. The perfect rebound.

It’s a flawless plan. Until the next day, when Abby realizes who he actually is. Not just a stranger. He is, in fact, Luke Bailey, aka the boy next door. Luke Bailey who—so help her God—she’s pretty sure she once shared baths with, back when they were kids. Not that she can allow herself to imagine him in a bath now, not without blushing from head to foot.

And judging by the smirk on his face, the same Luke Bailey who’s known exactly who she was the whole time… And who, like everyone in the village, still thinks she’s a high-flying New Yorker… who’s getting married next year.

Abby is certain getting under Luke will help her get over her ex. But the truth is stopping her. Can she admit to everyone back home that she’s single and has lost everything? Because, if she wants the boy next door, she may just have to…

Mini Review:

I’ll admit, I was a little worried about this one. I’m a huge fan of Catherine Walsh, but I discovered her through “Holiday Romance” (fantastic book!). When I decided to start from the beginning, I was disappointed in “One Night Only.” It just didn’t feel like the Catherine Walsh I had come to know and love from “Holiday Romance” and “Snowed In.”

I decided to persevere and cracked open “The Rebound.” I’m so happy I did! This is the Walsh I know. With “One Night Only,” she was finding her voice. In “The Rebound,” she definitely honed in on it, and I devoured this book.

While the banter and growth between Abby and Luke kept me engaged, it was Abby and Louise’s relationship that hooked me. Two sisters, so insanely opposite, pushed into a forced proximity situation, trying to navigate turbulent times without killing each other. While Tomaz was definitely there to break the tension, his moments were the perfect comedic relief.

Then you had Beth and Jess, secondary characters you couldn’t help but adore. Jess came in like the boss she was, and while she was only present for a small part of the book, you kind of missed her when she left. Beth was that best friend you always wished you had – so sweet, so kind, and just as lovable as can be.

Finally you have Abby and Luke. These two were made for each other, and there wasn’t a scene that passed between them when I wasn’t either smiling, chuckling, or sighing at the beautiful soul that was Luke Bailey. All love and comedy aside, I did enjoy the evolution of Abby’s character. I also liked how Catherine handled her character, allowing her to grow and flourish but not change who she was at the core. She didn’t follow the typical formula of a girl coming back home, and I appreciated it. The ending was somewhat predictable if you watched and listened to Luke closely, but it was still a beautiful way to end the story.
