Spice Rating Guide

Mild 🌶️

Description: A “Mild” rating signifies a book that has absolutely no spice. These books are considered closed-door romances and, if there is any hint of steam, it is kept to a bare minimum. Perfect for readers who prefer their romance sweet and subtle.

Medium 🌶️🌶️

Description: A “Medium” rating is given to books that have close-calls in terms of intimacy. While the romance may be a little more present, these books remain closed-door, often featuring fade-to-black moments. Ideal for readers who enjoy a touch of spice without explicit details.

Hot 🌶️🌶️🌶️

Description: A “Hot” rating denotes an open-door romance. These books are steamy, spicy, and may even cross over into the “smut” category. They are very descriptive in the intimate actions between characters, making them perfect for readers who crave detailed and passionate romance scenes.

Star Rating Guide

DNF (Did Not Finish)

Description: A DNF rating is given to books that could not be finished. These books were beyond all hope—either the characters were too flawed, the plot fell apart, or the book was mind-numbingly boring. Continuing to read would have been far too painful.

One Star ⭐

Description: A one-star rating is for books that didn’t even care to show up in the first place. These books were finished more than likely because they were ARCs; otherwise, they would have been DNF. The characters, plot, and overall concept were an epic fail.

Two Stars ⭐⭐

Description: A two-star rating goes to books that made a general effort but still didn’t succeed. There may have been one strong quality—either the plot or characters—but neither was sufficient enough to save the book. The plot might have had too many holes, or the characters were unrelatable and underdeveloped.

Three Stars ⭐⭐⭐

Description: A three-star rating is for books that showed up, did their job, and went home. These books weren’t anything to rave about. The characters were average, the plot was average—nothing spectacular or notable. It was finished and forgotten.

Four Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Description: A four-star rating means the book could have been a five-star if only it had done a few things differently. There might have been plot holes, slightly underdeveloped characters, or the story dragged on longer than necessary. It’s a good story overall but lagged in one area that prevented it from getting that last star.

Five Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Description: A five-star rating is given to books that hit it out of the park. The characters were solid, the plot was fantastic, and the book itself was captivating, memorable, and recommendable. You walked away with something extra that only this book could provide. It stays with you well beyond the moment you close the cover and is top of mind when someone asks for a recommendation.

At The Romantic Comedy Book Club, we’re committed to helping you find the romance books that best suit your preferences. Our spice and star rating guide provides a detailed breakdown of both intimacy levels and overall book quality, ensuring you can make informed choices. Happy reading!
